Effective use of the tremenduous amount of information stored on a typical personal computer asks for a comprehensive, application-spanning approach to personal information management. The EU-funded project NEPOMUK developed a system architecture, tools and prototype implementations, and models and ontologies which allow the user to organize, annotate and interconnect available information elements, thus representing and exploiting the individual interpretation of their meanings and interrelations and sharing such knowledge with others across the individual workspaces. The so-called Social Semantic Desktop relies on fundamental technologies and formalisms developed in the context of the semantic web. NEPOMUK obtained world-wide interest and a broad uptake by clear dedication to an Open-Source approach, which, however, required careful balancing between the interests of industrial and academic project partners. This chapter describes the results of the NEPOMUK project and summarizes the experiences about benefits and pitfalls of an Open Source approach in an international project consortium.
