Adriaan de Groot

Age: Born 6th Jan 1973 in Calgary, Canada. Adriaan de Groot is a Canadian by birth and a Dutchman by training. He has worked as a researcher in software quality and formal verification, is an experienced C++ programmer and an active member of several large Free Software organizations, including the Free Software Foundation Europe and KDE e.V. His university work culminated in his PhD. thesis on Practical Automaton Proofs in PVS at the University of Nijmegen. In 10 years of programming he has worked on many aspects of the KDE desktop software, focusing on software quality and portability issues so that all Free Software operating systems can use the software. Mathias Klang

Mathias Klang, LL.M., Ph.D. currently works as a researcher and senior lecturer at the University of Göteborg. His research revolves within the field of legal informatics with particular interest in copyright, democracy, human rights, free expression, censorship, open access and ethics. He has published several articles in these topics. Among his recent work is a co-edited volume (with Andrew Murray) entitled “Human Rights in the Digital Age”. In addition to this he defended his PhD thesis “Disruptive Technology” in October 2006. Jeremiah Foster

My interest and experience is in Linux and Free Software with a focus on developing software for the Internet. I have done a variety of work in this area, from testing to software design and development. I have also written a fair amount of technical documentation, both for Ericsson, O'Reilly Media, as well as for The Perl Review. I speak at conferences, mostly with debian and perl as my subject matter. Working with debian through helping the debian-perl team or managing packages is a how I try to reach my goal of helping the Free Software ecosystem thrive.

Mattias Wecksten

Mattias Wecksten area of expertise is research, tutoring and external courses. Teaching: Administration of computer systems, of operating systems as well as Data extraction from digital media. Area of research: The BERT (Budgeting for Embedded Real-Time Systems) project is focusing on how to, primarily in early design, cope with the growing system complexity. To increase engineering efficiency, we develop scheduling, allocation and analysis methods that can be integrated into a tool to help in the design of distributed embedded computer systems.

Björn Lundell

Dr. Björn Lundell has been researching the Open Source phenomenon for a number of years. He co-lead a work package in the EU FP6 CALIBRE project (2004-2006) and was the technical manager in the industrial (ITEA) research project COSI (2005-2008), involving analysis of the adoption of Open Source practices within companies. He is the project leader for the Open Source Action (OSA)-project (2008-2010), and the project leader for a Nordic (NordForsk) OSS Researchers Network (2009-2012). His research is reported in over 60 publications in a variety of international journals and conferences. He is a founding member of the IFIP Working Group 2.13 on Open Source Software, and the founding chair of Open Source Sweden, an industry association established by Swedish Open Source companies. He was the organiser of the Fifth International Conference of Open Source Systems (OSS 2009), which was held in Skövde, Sweden.

Oscar Swartz

Oscar Swarts started Sweden's first Internet Service Provider, Bahnhof, in 1994. He was a full-time writer at that time. Then, after 10 years of entrepreneurship, he went back to writing. He was also a co-founder of Scandinavia's largest gay media group, QX.

Now he is a leading critic in Sweden of intellectual "property" in the digital age. He has also published two reports for libertarian think tank Timbro about state surveillance of internet communication. He often occurs in Swedish media as a writer or commenter. He also lectures at conferences, both in Sweden and internationally and gives advice to firms on how to behave in this new world where copies are worthless. He went to a PhD program in financial economics at Columbia University in New York as a Fulbright Fellow after having graduated from Stockholm School of Economics. And in Berlin, where he currently writes a book on the future of culture in a digital world where copies can be made at no cost. Nevertheless he is also a bird-watcher and nature-lover now and then. He is driven by his passion for freedom of communications and love Schumpeterian creative destruction. He writes about the Pirate Bay, The Pirate Bureau and The Pirate Party and about other things that happen in Sweden. There is a Swedish way of looking at the future. We hope others will follow! David Tenser

David Tenser works for Mozilla as the project lead for Mozilla’s global open source support platform SUMO and the Firefox Support website. Mozilla has been his hobby since 2001 and he has still hard to believe that his hobby is now his full-time job. To some people, he is perhaps more known as djst, the author of the original Firefox Help and Thunderbird Help websites. Aside from being a big fan of Mozilla, he is also a strong believer in open source and a former computer science student. His first open source contribution was made back in 1996 when he wrote the game Battleship on his TI-82 calculator, a game that quickly spread out to the entire school. Edmund Harriss

Christina Haralanova

Feminist activist in Free Software, trainer and researcher since 2002. Working with feminist movements around the world for the appropriation of information and communication technologies through principles of solidarity, software freedom and privacy of information. Micke Nordin

Micke Nordin is a stone age archaeologist working for the county museum of Sörmland. He is 31 years old and he has been doing archaeology for the last six years. As an archaeologist he has excavated and analyzed about ten stone age sites ranging from 9000 - 2500 BC in eastern middle Sweden and his main interest is in the early mesolithic colonization process.

In his spare time he works a lot on Wikipedia where he is a sysop and bureaucrat and he also likes to code in PHP, C++, java and javascript.

Anders Kringstad

Anders Kringstad is a strong believer in the principles of free software. He is currently a free software solutions architect. Since early childhood he has been a computer addict and as he became aware of what one could do with computers - a part time classic Linux hacker. Currently he's the leader elect of Free software in schools Norway (FRISK) - the organization overseeing development of the Skolelinux distribution in Norway. Besides free software related work and organizational activities he's a founding member of 'On.Wheelz.Biz', a little road cycling club. Smári McCarthy

Smári McCarthy is an Icelandic innovator serving as a board member of the Icelandic Society for Digital Freedoms (FSFÍ), and a participant in the Global Swadeshi movement. He has been keynote speaker at FSCONS. He has proposed the Shadow Parliament Project and writes on technology, anarchism, and Icelandic culture at Yaxic.org and Anarchism.is. Erik Zachte

Erik Zachte is Dutch, born in 1955 and live in Leiden. His interests are: science, history, movies, modern art, games. He studied biochemistry and history each for several years, did two out of three years advanced software engineering (AMBI) (all technically oriented modules, plus a fair amount of statistics), more recently visited art school (Rietveld Academy) for two years. As he explains his unfinished studies, he study out of eagerness to learn, and despite quite satisfactory grades not especially as preparation for a career. A family trait, my brother and sister each did not complete three studies, and like me suffered no terrible consequences. He worked in ICT at KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) for 27 years. Since September 2008 he works part-time for the Wikimedia Foundation as data analyst. Although he can safely say that he has excellent analytical skills, and particularly enjoyed statistics at higher education (AMBI), he states clearly (people do ask this) that he is not an expert statistician (as a physicist or mathematician would be). His job focuses on data mining and no frills communication of findings to a wide audience.

Karsten Gerloff

Karsten Gerloff is a Free Software researcher and activist. He has been involved in FSFE since early 2005. Having started as an intern, Karsten soon focused on policy and strategy aspects of Free Software. In particular he worked with FSFE to push for reform at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). After completing his studies in cultural sciences, Karsten worked as a researcher in the Collaborative Creativity Group at the United Nations University's MERIT institute (UNU-MERIT) in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Daniel Stenberg

Daniel Stenberg is a computer consultant, a computer freak and a hacker, as he call himself. He's been programming for fun and profit since 1985. He enjoys traveling a lot, doing white water kayaking, playing innebandy, watching good movies and having a good irish ale. He lives in Huddinge, just south of Stockholm, Sweden. Amelia Andersdotter

Anna Amelia Matilda Katarina Andersdotter, född 30 augusti 1987 i Enköping, är en svensk piratpartist, som var andranamn på Piratpartiets lista till Europaparlamentsvalet 2009. Hon bor i Lund och studerar vid Lunds universitet, där hon läser matematik, fysik, spanska och handelsrätt. Sedan 2007 är hon styrelseledamot i Piratpartiets ungdomsförbund, Ung Pirat. I Europaparlamentsvalet i Sverige 2009 fick Andersdotter 9,87% (22303 stycken) av Piratpartiets personröster och placerade sig som tvåa på listan efter Christian Engström. Med sina 21 år kommer hon bli den yngsta ledamöterna i Europaparlamentet när hon sedan Lissabonfördraget gått igenom föräras Piratpartiets andra mandat i parlamentet. Hon har en bakgrund inom World Urban Forum och har sagt att hon övervägde att skänka en del av sin eventuella lön som parlamentariker till, förutom Piratpartiet och Ung Pirat, också Attac, Ordfront, Amnesty och UNIFEM.

Marcin Jakubowski

Marcin Jakubowski was born in Poland. At the age of ten, during the martial law period of Poland, he left for America. His interests from early on were in application of knowledge to providing quality of life for all. He pursued a degree in Chemistry, and graduated with Honors from Princeton University in 1995. He continued on to a Ph.D. in physics, from U. Wisconsin, Madison, in the field of Fusion Energy. He found both experiences lacking in terms of practical application to addressing pressing world issues. With this quest in mind, formulated the Open Source Ecology concept in 2003. Since then, he has been engaged full time in the development of open source technology. He is presently part of a practical social experiment for creating the world's first, replicable, open source, post-industrial global village, with a living laboratory at Factor e Farm. His main interest is evolving to freedom, and making such an option practical for anyone interested in a better world.

Henri Bergius

Henri Bergius is a former Viking based in the Nordic country of Finland. When he is not exploring the cave cities of Georgia or running with bulls in Pamplona, Bergie works on web services built on top of the Midgard toolkit. His company Nemein provides web solutions for several major companies in Finland and abroad.

After half decade of regular web development, Henri got involved with free software in 1999 when he coordinated the public release of the Midgard content management system. Since then he has been actively working on integrating standards like RSS and Microformats into the system and traveling the world advocating for interoperation between open source CMSs.

When duties allow, Bergie escapes the crunch to explore the hills of Lapland or rides his classic motorcycle. He is also an amateur pilot.

Anne Østergaard

Anne Østergaard holds a Law Degree from The University of Copenhagen. After a decade in government service, international organizations, and private enterprise she is presently an Libre Software entrepreneur. Anne is member of the GNOME Foundation.

As a Fellowship Member of FSFE Anne is working against the legalisation of software patents in Europe. Anne is also working for free and open standards and file formats, Libre Software in education, in the health care sector, and FLOSS as development aide, privacy on the Internet and more women active in the ICT sector.

Anne Østergaard's interests lies in the area of the long-term strategic issues of Free Software in the social, legal, research, and economic area of our global society.- Information Communication Technologies are important to the individual citizen's life and personal possibilities in the information society in order to obtain, and secure democratic freedom rights.

Christopher Kullenberg

Christopher Kullenberg is a Ph.D-candidate in Theory of Science at the Faculty for Humanities, University of Gothenburg. His dissertation has the work-in-progress title: Sociology in the Making; the Co-production of Social Scientific Facts and Swedish Society. It concerns the emergence and production of social scientific knowledge in modern societies, focusing especially on the Swedish case in relation to global trends. Besides being a theorist of science, Kullenberg also writes about philosophy, politics, internet regulation and (post)digital culture. His basic training consists of masters degrees in theory of science and media- and communication studies.
